What is Horizontal Launch Angle?

Let's start with a definition - Horizontal launch angle (or Launch Direction) is the direction the ball starts relative to your target line. It's measured in degrees compared to the target line where:

Left = negative
Right = positive

Why Launch Direction Matters

This is the line your ball actually starts on, not where it ends. Start line is responsible for ~80–90% of initial direction — meaning if this is wrong, the shot is already in trouble.

To simplify it slightly, we can think of launch direction in terms of shot type Push (+), Pull (-) or Straight (0).

By looking at your launch direction data, it can help identify ball flight issues and swing mechanics. When you combine Horizontal Launch Angle with other data metrics such as Face to Target and Club Path, it shines a light on what you are actually doing in your swing versus what you think you're doing.

What Controls It?

Primarily, it's clubface angle at impact where the face controls start direction as that's the what is impacting the ball. This can lead to some confusion because let's say you're trying to hit it dead straight at the target but the ball is starting right and fading away - this means that your clubface is open at impact (because the launch direction is right) and your swing is likely neutral (i.e. in line with the target line). These factors combined means the swing direction (or Club Path) is applying spin to the ball which is causing the fade shot shape. So, remember:

  • Ball starting right → open face
  • Ball starting left → closed face

How to Fix It

  • Improve clubface control
  • Train impact position
  • Use slow-motion reps and feedback

And this is where golf tech can help make the difference.

To master your clubface control then look no further than HackMotion. The HackMotion Core measures your wrist position throughout the swing, identifies swing faults and provides tailored coaching drills to help you fix the issues.

Launch monitors remove all the guesswork and can provide a full set of data metrics to show Launch direction, Face angle and much more! To access this level of data you will need a mid-high end launch monitor, such as the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 with the Pro Package upgrade.

Summary

If you can’t control where the ball starts… You can’t control where it finishes.

The Launch Direction (or Horizontal Launch Angle) will mostly dictate where the shot ends up. By learning how to control the clubface through your swing and at impact you can start the ball on the right path and be more accurate. Once you learn to control the clubface you can use shot shaping techniques around the course to improve your course strategy and lower your scores.

Use golf tech. Understand your swing. Play better golf.

Driven by Data: What is a Good Smash Factor?

Driven by Data: What Does Spin Axis Mean?

Spin axis is the axis around which the ball is rotating relative to the ground. The angle of this axis determines the curvature of the ball, and the spin rate and ball speed of the ball determines how far it curves. Once you learn how to manipulate the spin axis through face angle and club path by controlling your swing, you can play a round and be able to draw and fade the ball flight as required and in control, which will lower your scores.
