What is Club Acceleration Profile?

Club acceleration profile measures how quickly your club gains speed during the swing. It’s about the rate of acceleration — not just the speed.

It's why tour pro's have effortless swings, and many amateurs come off the range exhausted. When you apply the power in the swing makes all the difference.

This data metric will show you the profile of your golf swing and show you where the club is accelerating relative to impact.

Why It Matters

Acceleration Profile provides critical data for:

  • Power
  • Timing
  • Efficient strikes

The best players accelerate smoothly, transfer the energy applied to club in an optimal way with the club head speed peaking at impact. Not before.

If you're swinging from the top and applying all your power at the top of your swing to try and hit it as far as you can then the club will actually be decelerating by the time it gets down to the ball. Why? Because you're applying the power too soon and in the wrong direction. This will result in a loss of power and inefficient. inconsistent ball striking with low accuracy.

A good training tip to fix this issue are trying to let the club 'fall' back down from the top, rather than forcing it down. Jon Rahm has a practice drill (as explained in this YouTube link by Russell Heritage) where he only takes the club halfway back and then tries to hit it as far as he can, and I would highly recommend it. It forces you sequence your body properly to maximise the distance by applying the power at the bottom of the swing. It will feel very strange the first time you try it, but it really helps.

How to Improve Club Acceleration

Many golfers struggle with the correct club acceleration profile, and too often are over-swinging - trying too hard! Relax and let the club do the work. Smooth, controlled swings are the name of the game.

  • Proper sequencing of the body (No early extension, clear those hips!)
  • Smooth transition from backswing to downswing
  • Maintain rhythm
  • Focus on releasing the club through impact

How Golf Tech Helps

This is where high-end launch monitors come into their own. The lower level launch monitors can provide many helpful data points, but not this level of detail. For club acceleration profile you will need either a FlightScope Mevo Gen2 with the Pro Package upgrade, a FlightScope X3C, Foresight or a TrackMan.

If you're struggling with releasing the club correctly and not holding the lag, then I'd highly recommend the HackMotion swing analyser which analyses your wrist position throughout the swing. They've just released the new gen 4 version and it's available in the Core (full swing only), Plus (adds putting mode), or Pro (higher data analytics and multiple profiles) models.

We also offer our Fix Your Swing bundles which pairs together golf technology that works together, such as the Know Your Numbers bundle which combines the Mevo Gen2 with Pro Package and Face Impact Location bundle with a HackMotion Plus to give you all the data you need to see data-driven improvement and saves you money.

Summary

Acceleration is hidden power. Swing from the top and you're wasting energy and club head speed. Learn to swing from the bottom and you'll see effortless distance and consistent ball striking.

Use Golf Technology. Understand Your Swing. Lower Your Scores.

Driven by Data: Vertical Descent Angle Explained

Vertical descent angle is the angle your ball comes down at when landing, or how steeply it falls out of the sky. This is mainly going to determine the ball's stopping power on the greens. Let's take a look at why this is important for playing better golf.
